NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL INDEPENDENT MEDICAL EXAMINATION IME
|
What is Independent Medical Examination IME?
Independent Medical Examination (IME) is an exam requested by the defense attorney in order
to examine claimants', or plaintiffs', alleged personal injury as a result of the accident.
Independent Medical Examination (IME) usually involve an examination of physical injury (i.e.,
back pain, tingling in hands and feet, headaches, nausea), cognitive injury (i.e., memory loss,
concentration loss, slow thinking, word finding problem) or emotional injury (i.e., anxiety,
depression, mood swings, poor anger control) that reportedly resulted from the injury.
If a plaintiff, or a claimant, alleges multiple injuries, he or she may be requested to undergo
multiple Independent Medical Examinations (IME) with various doctors who specialize in those
specific areas of health (i.e., neuropsychologist for cognitive and emotional problems secondary
to a head injury, orthopedist for a broken bone, pain management specialist or physiatrist for
chronic pain).
Independent Medical Examination (IME) are often required to answer specific medical questions,
including relationships of diagnosis to the injury, accident or illness, further treatment
recommendations, extent of permanent impairment or disability, and other information as needed.
NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL Independent Medical Examination (IME) involves the same
procedures as the clinical neuropsychological testing, with the exception of treatment
recommendations, which are absent in Independent Medical Examination (IME) because this
examination implies a non-treating patient-doctor relationship. Thus, Neuropsychological
Independent Medical Examination (IME) also takes several hours to complete and begins with an
extensive clinical interview, followed by one several-hour long neuro-cognitive testing
appointment or multiple shorter neuro-cognitive testing appointments. There is no final
consultation appointment. After the testing appointment(s), the neuropsychologist scores the
test data, analyses the results, and prepares a report of findings. Neuropsychological
Independent Medical Examination (IME) can objective measure claimant's cognitive injury and
determine if cognitive skills are truly impaired or not, relative to claimant's prior level of
functioning. Sometimes emotional factors lead to subjective experience of a cognitive injury.
Sometimes there are secondary gains that can lead to subjective experience of a cognitive
injury.
Another difference of the Neuropsychological Independent Medical Examination (IME) from a
clinical neuropsychological assessment is that no parts of Neuropsychological Independent
Medical Examination (IME) are confidential. The information is released to the party who
requested this Neuropsychological Independent Medical Examination (IME) and other parties
and agencies that possess a proper release of information documentation.
